Kathmandu: A nine-member delegation of American Chamber of Commerce in India (ACCI) has shown interest to invest in Nepal in the fields of infrastructure, IT, water resources, food and beverage, health-related equipment, as well as agriculture based industries. ACCI Vice-chairman Aniruddha Lahiri said they were excited about bringing American investment in Nepal. However, they expressed concern about UCPN-Maoist's economic policy and security of their investment.
"We held talks with Maoist leaders and they showed positive gesture for supporting foreign direct investment," he said. The delegation had earlier met Maoist chief Prachanda and his deputy Baburam Bhattarai. "Our party knows the importance of foreign investment as Nepal needs more investment now," he quoted Bhattarai as saying.
The delegation wanted to know more about Maoist economic policy and investment security in the wake of recent attack on Indian power company, GMR, which is developing the biggest hydropower project in western Nepal. The nine-member team led by Lahiri, along with US Ambassador to Nepal Scott H DeLisi, also called on Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal at the latter's office. Welcoming the delegation, Khanal said Nepal has great potential for development, and business opportunities are abundant. (PTI)
