New Zealand: A 5.0-magnitude aftershock one kilometre deep rattled the already nervous New Zealand city of Christchurch early, but there were no immediate reports of new damage or injuries.
The moderate but very shallow tremor is the latest in a series to strike Christchurch over the last two days. One person died in the previous tremors.
The latest aftershock hit at 6:27 am (local time), 32 kilometres from the badly shaken city, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
Residents said the aftershock was felt strongly. Monday's initial 6.0-magnitude earthquake has increased the likelihood of another strong quake of the same magnitude occurring in the city in the next 12 months, local experts said.
Christchurch is still recovering from a 6.3 quake in February that killed 181 people. That came after one of 7.0-magnitude in September.
