New Delhi: Well, you've handled your nine months of discomforts and strenous labour and delivery, but today a new life is in front of you. With a newborn comes a lot of responsibilities and it can cause some nervousness for most new moms, especially those with firstborns. Plus, alot of the advice can be quite overwhelming. Here are three tips to keep in mind while caring for your newborns:
* Breastfeeding - The decision to breastfeed is the best gift you can give to your newborn. Regarding breastfeeding, a good latch is very important, since improper latching can cause breast discomfort. A good latch means the baby’s mouth covers both your nipple and the areola. This way the baby’s mouth, tongue and lips will massage the milk out of your milk glands.
* Give sponge baths in the beginning - It is very important to give your newborn baby sponge baths until the remaining umbilical cord falls off. Always remember, when the umbilical cord is kept dry, it falls off faster. This may take 2 to 3 weeks. Point to note: if the umbilical chord gets wet - pat it dry right away.
*Change diapers/nappies timely: Though diaper changing can be messy or smelly, it is one duty which needs constant attention. A wet or soiled diaper is prone to rashes and many infections.
