The AITA has discouraged Bopanna's request who had picked Saketh Myneni as his choice of partner for men's doubles at the Olympic Games.
"Committee decided that the best bet for Indian tennis to win a medal at the Olympics would be Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna," said AITA chief Anil Khanna.
"He (Bopanna) has given reasons to selection committee on why he feels Saketh could be a better doubles partner. But he has also made it clear that he wants to represent the nation. It was a well-meaning letter (which Bopanna wrote yesterday to AITA). Leander and Rohan have played four times in Davis Cup, they have a 2-2 record," Khanna said.
However, tennis is a game that requires a silent unison, where players focus on winning the game rather than letting their personal egos get in the way. While Paes has been screaming from rooftops as to how his pairing with Bopanna would be the best for the next Olympics, his fallout with him at the previous Davis Cup has taken him several steps back in terms of trust.
However, what has worked in Paes' favour is that Bopanna did not have any reservations towards AITA's decision, showing true team spirit.
In a departure from norms, AITA has named a seven-member team for players to spend a week together before the Games in order to bond.
