Alert! Terrorists planning 26/11-like attacks across India: Intelligence report

New Delhi: Forewarning the government of a 26/11-like terror attack, the Intelligence agencies on Friday said that the terrorists are planning to attack Indian ports and small islands spread across the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

Militants might take advantage of the weak security system, sources in the Intelligence Bureau said, after identifying about 180 small ports and islands in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala from where the terror organisations can infiltrate and wreak havoc in the country.

In a powerpoint presentation, the Intelligence Bureau submitted their security audit of ports and islands to the Central government. Acting thereupon, the government has directed the concerned agencies to strictly implement the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for coastal security which had been in place after the November 26, 2008, Mumbai attacks.

Earlier this week, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had called a security meeting with the Home Ministers, Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police (DGPs) of coastal states and Union Territories in Mumbai to review the coastal security of the country.

The intelligence report also claims that the militants could use Indian ships operating close to the coastal areas to launch an attack. In a bid to counter such possibility, they have identified about 30 vulnerable ports and at least 10 small isolated islands which could be used by the terror outfits as a hide-out.
