Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi today met Dipa Karmakar, the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympic games at Rio and 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' ambassador, for a warm send-off. Karmakar is the mascot for WCD Ministry's flagship programme as well as Prime Minister's pet project 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' scheme for Gomati District in Tripura.
The athlete, who has several medals to her credit, said, "I am very excited to be the ambassador for this programme. I will appeal to all girls to study as well as play sports."
Gandhi said: "We are very proud of Dipa. She represents all the abilities that Indian women have. I am sure that she will do extremely well at Rio. Since she is our mascot for 'Beti Bachao...' she will bring greater glory to it."
Karmakar is an Indian Artistic gymnast from Agartala, Tripura, who became the first woman gymnast ever to secure an Olympic berth to Rio by garnering a total score of 52.698 points. She also holds the laurels of becoming the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the Olympics after 52 years. PTI
