Angry at Prachanda's India visit, China cancels Xi's Nepal visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping has cancelled his visit to Nepal amid reports of Nepalese Prime Minister Prachanda's scheduled three-day trip to India beginning from September 15. The decision is widely seen as a huge setback to the bilateral relations of the two nations.

The decision to cancel Xi's visit was conveyed to Nepalese Foreign Secretary Shankar Bairagi by the Chinese ambassador to Nepal Wu Chuntai two days ago.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended an invitation to the Nepalese PM last month to visit India at the earliest.

According to highly reliable sources, China is disappointed with Nepal over various other issues including lack of preparedness and commitment to joining its One Belt, One Road project — a framework that proposes connectivity and cooperation between China and the rest of Eurasia.
