Guwahati: Defying all odds, Sarfaraz Hussain has topped class 10th board examination in Assam, the result of which were announced on Tuesday.
Hussain is the student of Sankardev Sishu Niketan, a cluster of schools run under the RSS-affiliated Vidya Bharati. 16-year-old Hussain scored 590 marks out of 600.
Hussain's achievement has become the talking point of Assam whose father, Azmal Hussain, works as waiter in a restaurant. “I am thankful to my teachers and parents for all the support. I was thinking that I would get a position in top 10. I never expected that I would secure the top position,” said Sarfaraz.
Sarfaraz, who wants to become an engineer, takes active participation in all the extra curricular activities in his school.
All the 24 Muslim students of the school have bagged prizes in the Bhagwad Gita contest. The students of the school face no such problems in chanting Gayatri Mantra. “I can easily chant Gayatri Mantra and read Sanskrit as well. Till class 8th, I scored full marks in Sanskrit,” added Sarfaraz.
Nearly 4 lakh students had appeared for class 10 th examination this year.
