Earlier, he claimed the award in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2009.
In 2016, he arned his record-extending fifth after being runner-up to his great rival for the past two years.
He had 41.33% of the vote, with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo (27.76%) second and Barca's Neymar (7.86%) third.
United States midfielder Carli Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final, won the women's award over Aya Miyama (Japan/Okayama Yunogo Belle) and Célia Šašić (Germany/Célia Šašić). Abby Wambach was the last American woman to win the award in 2012; she was followed by two German women.
