Rising Pune Supergiants has axed MS Dhoni from the captaincy and preferred Steve Smith over him in the upcoming IPL 2017 which is set to start from April. Former Indian captain who stepped down from captaincy in ODI format before the start of the England series will now be playing as only wicket keeper batsman for the franchise. Steve Smith is currently captain of the Australian team in all three formats of the game.
Confirming the news, Pune franchise owner said, "Yes we have opted for Australian Steve Smith as captain of Pune for the forthcoming IPL season and I had been thinking about this decision since the end of the last season and discussed with the management team. And we decided to have a younger captain to lead the team this year.
Despite having a good mix of youth and experience Pune finished seventh in their maiden season last year.Goenka further added, "We could have done much better. I have one more year as a franchise owner and I want to give it my best and I think Smith can make the difference and he will get all the support he needs from the team management.
