Gauhati: The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday issued orders staying 400-years old Bulbul fight at a historic temple in Assam’s Kamrup district, which is organized during Bhogali Bihu (Makar Sankranti) celebrations.
Hearing a petition by the Animal Welfare Board of India, a bench of justice Rumi Kumari Phukan stayed its till January 20.
The petition was filed challenging the earlier order of the High Court, which allowed Bulbul fights at the Hajo temple.
Bulbuls are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and are reportedly captured from the wild by villagers who then train them by intoxicating their food with marijuana and starve the bird a night before the fight.
However, according to the temple authorities, the birds are not harmed and are set free immediately after the fights.
