Mumbai: Ushering hopes of a better life for the city’s LGBT citizens, Humsafar Trust in collaboration with Wings Travel has launched India’s first LGBT radio taxi service in Mumbai.
Under the project, both the organizations will train LGBT community members interested in taking up driving as a profession and obtain a driving license.
After successful implementation in Mumbai, the organizations are aiming to turn the service called ‘Wings Rainbow’ into a nationwide scheme.
The Supreme Court had recognized transgender as a legal third gender in April 2014 and in a landmark judgment called on the government to ensure equal treatment to them.
Meanwhile, members of the LGBT community welcomed the scheme saying that their role as taxi drivers would bring in some change in the mindset of people.
