New Delhi: Zika is spreading explosively in United States, claims recent World Heath Organisation’s report.
It stated that that the virus had now been detected in 23 countries in the Americas and warned other countries to take preventive measures before it’s too late.
Here are five must know facts about this deadly virus:
Zika was first detected in Uganda in 1947, but has never caused an outbreak on this scale.Brazil reported the first cases of Zika in South America in May 2015.
Spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also carries dengue fever and yellow fever.
Can lead to fever and a rash but most people show no symptoms, linked to shrunken brains in children and can leave children mentally incapacitated for the remainder of their life.
In rare cases the disease may also lead to complications including Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disorder of the nervous system which can cause paralysis and there is no known cure.
To fight Zika, clear stagnant water where mosquitoes breed, and protect against mosquito bites.
