Imtiaz Ali and Ekta Kapoor to reprise Laila-Majhnu!

Certain love stories are timeless, and so, they are retold across generations. In the latest example, storytellers Imtiaz Ali and Ekta Kapoor have revisited the tale of 'Laila Majnu', to give it a contemporary touch. Imtiaz has written the story and co-written the screenplay of the movie, set in modern-day Kashmir. It launches a set of newcomer actors, who were handpicked and groomed by Imtiaz after several auditions. The film also marks his brother, Sajid Ali’s directorial debut.

Imtiaz's take on love is truly commendable.  His heart is always in the right place and his take on relationships is what defines a coming of age perspective rather than a passe idea of what love stories should be like. There's a plethora of surreal locales, an inspiring journey in place and there's always a rural (desi) touch - whether it's to his characters, or their value-systems. But what causes a connect with the audiences is his build up of characters and how delicately he puts it all in place as a healing journey. There's a human, who seems normal at first, but finds itself confused, battling with inner demons, intermingled in modern-day relationships and experiencing an ever-growing surge to find one's passion.

Ekta is also a modern-day storyteller of sorts. Though her TV serials might depict something else, but she has infused them with modern thoughts and sensibilities. She is also quite excited to be collaborating with the Ali brothers. “I’m happy to creatively collaborate with Imtiaz and see his vision through. Moreover, this story has given us a chance to launch new talent. We are wrapping up the shoot fast. I’m excited to retell this classic love story with a fresh spin.”

Imtiaz says, “I’ve always been fascinated by legendary love stories and I wonder what keeps them alive for eons. The thought of revisiting 'Laila Majnu' has been on my mind for a while. There’s something magical and modern about the madness of their love.”
