Ind v Pak: Amitabh Bachchan didn’t charge a penny to sing national anthem

It was the 19th day into the month of March. Having lost to New Zealand in their first encounter of the T20 World Cup, the ‘Men in Blues’ were in a state of despair. They were to face Pakistan in the next league match. The stakes were high, and emotions at its peak in Eden Gardens as people from all around the country came to witness the mega clash. However, they were in for a show — on that set the perfect mood before the high voltage match.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan graced the audience on Saturday with the soulful national anthem that gave goosebumps to more than 60,000 audience and lakhs other glued to their television sets to watch the decisive Indo-Pak match.

A falsified report on social media went viral suggesting that the versatile actor had charged 4 crores from CAB to be present at the stadium and sing the national anthem.

Absurd as it may seem in the first place it is absolutely fine for an actor to charge an appearance fee the fans were aghast at the (mis)information and wondered if the nationalism was also an ‘act’.

All such rumours were, once and for all laid to rest as CAB President Sourav Ganguly went on the record to say that Big B didn't take a single penny to sing the national anthem at Eden Gardens.

"Mr Bachchan is one and only, a special person. I am eternally grateful to him," he was quoted saying. "Can you ever imagine someone paying Rs 30 lakhs of his own pocket to perform? He booked his own flight, bought his own tickets and even paid the hotel bills. I literally begged him to take some money but he said that I am doing it for love and there is no question of money being involved".
