India's Thumri Queen no more

New Delhi, Oct 25: Classical singer Girija Devi, also known as India's "Thumri Queen", passed away yesterday following a cardiac arrest. A singer of the Seniya and Benarasi gharanas, credited with having uplifted the profile of "thumri" genre of classical music, the Padma Vibhushan awardee had been admitted to Kolkata's BM Birla Heart Research Centre after she complained of chest pains. According to family sources, she was put on life-support on Tuesday morning, and passed away at 8:55 pm.

First introduced to music by her father, Devi's first performance came on the All India Radio Allahabad in 1949. Her first public concert was in Bihar in 1951. She was also a regular performer who toured till 2009.
