Imphal: Human rights activist Irom Sharmila, who has been on fast for the last 16 years demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), will break her fast today.
“I will break my fast as the government has failed to give any positive response... I will fight elections to resolve the issues,” Irom told ANI outside the Imphal court.
The activist was arrested and released a number of times under section 309 for attempted suicide.
Irom Sharmila's brother Singhjit Irom told ANI, “I want to meet her, and hear her last decision. Will plan for our future. I tried to meet Irom after her declaration of ending the fast, but I was not given permission. My mother decided not to meet Sharmila until and unless she gets her demand fulfilled.”
The activist earlier said that she is keen to contest election to resolve the issue. Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party have thrown their doors open for her, saying that she is welcome to join their party.
