JNU row: Top panel recommends rustication of Kanhaiya, 4 others

New Delhi: A high-level inquiry committee of JNU on Monday recommended rustication of Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and two others for their alleged role in the controversial event on Parliamentary attack convict Afzal Guru in the varsity last month.

According to reports, final decision on the recommendations suggested by the panel will be taken by the varsity Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar and Chief Proctor A Dimri.

Meanwhile, the varsity also issued a show-cause notice to 21 students, including Kanhaiya, Ariban and Umar Khalid, for violating norms in connection with the contentious Afzal Guru event, where anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.

JNU had constituted a five-member inquiry committee on February 10, a day after an event to protest against the hanging of Afzal Guru on his death anniversary was allegedly held in the varsity campus. Based on a preliminary report by the committee, the varsity had suspended eight students while allowing them to stay in the hostels till the inquiry proceedings were over.
