JNU scholar threatens suicide over ‘caste discrimination’

New Delhi: Amid the raging nationwide protest over the alleged suicide of Hyderabad based Dalit research scholar Rohit Vemula, another research scholar has threated to commit suicide.

According to reports, in a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Madan Meher, a PhD scholar at the Jawahar Lal Nehru University, has threatened to take the extreme step if he does not get one-year extension for his senior research fellowship.

Alleging caste-based discrimination by his department, the PhD scholar has demanded resumption of his fellowship in a week’s time or he would commit suicide.

Citing an RTI reply, Meher said that no Dalit scholar has completed PhD from the Centre since 2006.

JNU administration has called on a meeting on February 8 to resolve the issue.
