New Delhi, Oct 25: Having faced continual flak from Opposition parties for the delay in announcing the dates for the Gujarat Assembly elections recently, the Election Commission has finally announce the dates at 1 pm on Wednesday. The 182-member strong State assembly in Gujarat ends it's term on January 23 next year. Live updates:
-No candidate can spend more than 28 lakh in campaigning

-Gujarat Elections will be held in two phases.

Opposition parties have continually been attacking the EC by alleging that the delay was pre-mediated to allow the BJP government in the state and at the Centre to dole out pre-poll largesses to garner more votes for itself, in blatant violation of the election body's own model code of conduct. Rejecting the allegations, the EC named several factors like weather, festivities and flood relief work that needed to considered before the election dates could be announced.
It was widely expected that the dates for the Gujarat assembly elections would be announced along with Himachal Pradesh's assembly elections, but it was not to be. The counting of votes for both elections however, will be on December 18, as stated by the EC
