New Delhi, Oct 20: 26 workers have been hurt in attacks on workers at key Pakistani port for Chinese project. In what can be seen as a major thwart to the on-going work in the Pakistani port of Gwadar,some unidentified miscreants threw a grenade into a labourers' hostel which left 26 wounded. This is being taken as a serious issue as the attack is likely to rise concern about security for the Pakistani section of China's Belt and Road initiative.
Suspected separatists often target non-native labourers in the province. Gwadar port, built with Chinese funding, as Pakistan and China ink agreements at the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing to boost bilateral cooperation. Offficials are of the view that the terrorists are trying to disrupt construction of the corridor. From its sie Pakistan has assured that it is capable of providing security to the projects worth $57billion.
The deep-water port has a strategic importance for the Belt and Road initiative, a part of which - the USD 46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) - connects Pakistans southern region to Chinas western Xinjiang region through rail and roads. The CPEC is billed as a game-changer and manifestation of strategic partnership between Pakistan and China. Pakistan has deployed a Maritime Security Force and Special Security Division to protect projects under CPEC, including Gwadar. The forces have been deployed to ensure safety of locals and foreigners working on the projects.
