New Delhi, Sep 25:All households in the country will access to electricity by end of 2018. With this aim, PM Narendra Modi on Monday launched an ambitious Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojna-Saubhagya scheme. The government will spend a total Rs 16,320 crore on the project. Of the total amount budgetary assistance will be Rs 12,320 crore. The target is to provide electricity to all households from Kashmir to Kanyakumari by December 2018.
Along with electrification, the Saubhagya scheme aims to promote substitution of kerosene as fuel in households, improvement in educational and health services, improvement in communication and public safety. The government hopes that this will bring in increased job opportunities and improve quality of life, especially of women in the rural areas.
Under the scheme, smart and e-meters will be installed at every village and one would be able to recharge them with the phones, just like their telephone connection. One can even do a recharge of Rs 50.
Government hopes that this scheme will put an end to loadshedding. “There should be no power outages due to shortage in supply. This is the target,” Minister of state (Power) RK Singh said on the occasion
