Kolkata/Guwahati: Polling for the first phase of assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam began on Monday morning amid tight security.
While West Bengal will have elections spread over six phases, polls in Assam will be conducted in two phases.
In first phase of West Bengal assembly elections, 133 candidates will test their luck in 18 constituencies spread across the three western districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.
As many as 40,09,171 electors including 16 transgender voters will exercise their franchise in the first phase of voting, which will end at 4 pm.
In Assam, a total of 95,11,732 voters will decide the fate of 539 candidates in 65 of the 126 constituencies.
Polling in West Bengal will end on May 5.
