World’s largest single rooftop solar power plant of 11.5 Mw capacity was inaugurated near Amritsar in Punjab on Tuesday. Spread on a single rooftop stretch of 42 acre at Dera Baba Jaimal, the project was conceptualized earlier this year. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal along with New and Renewable Energy Resources Minister Bikram Singh Majithia inaugurated the 139 crore project. The Chief Minister lauded the achievement of Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) to bring in a revolution in solar energy use in the state.
In addition to this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi awarded Punjab for being one of the best performing states for capacity addition of solar energy during 'Re-Invest-2015'.
In efforts to promote green and environmentally-friendly technology, the plant will generate about 150 lakh units of power annually and is expected to offset 19,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Additionally, seven other solar plants of 8 MW each were also inaugurated, thus making the Beas Dera campus the only campus generating solar power of 19.5 MW at multiple rooftops in the country.
This endeavor by the state of Punjab would go a long way to motivate the other states for impersonation of such projects to provide a better and cleaner environment to its residents.
