CHANDIGARH, JAN 17: Special CBI judge in Panchkula, Jagdeep Singh, on Thursday, awarded life term to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim and three others for the 2002 murder of Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chhatarpati, the editor of 'Poora Sach' newspaper.
The Judge pronounced quantum of sentence through video conferencing to Dera chief, Dera manager Krishan Lal and two Dera carpenters Kuldeep Singh and Nirmal Singh. The Dera chief is incarcerated in Rohtak's Sunaria jail since August 2017 serving a 20-year sentence for rape of two women devotees, while Dera manager Krishan Lal and two Dera carpenters are lodged in Ambala Jail.
It was region's first e-judgement by special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh.
On January 11, the Special CBI judge in Panchkula Jagdeep Singh had convicted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and three others in the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatarpati. The accused were convicted under Section 302 (Punishment for murder), 120 B (Criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and under Arms Act.
According to the CBI chargesheet, Dera manager Krishan Lal had given his licensed revolver and a walkie-talkie to two shooters -Kuldeep Singh and Nirmal Singh - in the presence of Dera chief. Thereafter, both the accused fired at Chhatarpati in front of his house on October 24, 2002. He died three weeks later. Chhatarpati had been writing against the Dera chief in his newspaper 'Poora Sach'.
