Rio 2016: India beat Argentina 2-1 in men’s hockey

New Delhi: Staging a comprehensive win against Argentina since 2009, Indian men’s hockey team beat the men in blues 2-1 in their third Pool B encounter at the Olympic Hockey Centre on Tuesday to climb to the second spot in the standing with two wins to their name.

Manipur’s Chinglensana Kangujam scored the opening goal for India in the eight minute and the lead was doubled in the third quarter by another Manipuri player – Kothajit Khadangbam.

Showcasing a splendid display of defense and attack, the Indian team dominated the first three-quarters and scored two goals. The Argentinians pressed forward and went on to attack in the fourth, and tried to penetrate the open defensemostly trying to gain a penalty corner.

A deja vu of the yesterday's match with Germany struck the Indian fans, who were weary of witnessing yet another late crackdown after Argentina netted one on a penalty. Several other penalties followed, but goalkeeper Sreejesh made sure that no other goal would follow.
