Rio Paralympics gold medallist also has a heart of gold

New Delhi: It was a moment of pride and elation of the highest order when Mariyappan Thangavelu won a gold medal for India in the T42 High Jump event at the Rio Paralympics.

 

But, did you know that the person who created history a couple of days back is also blessed with a golden heart?

 

Thangavelu decided to donate Rs 30 lakh from his 2 crore prize—a reward from the Jayalalithaa government money for his exceptional performance—to the government school which groomed him as a student in Tamil Nadu.

 

The bringer of India’s third gold medal in Paralympics history, the 21-year-old' became the first Indian to win a medal in the High Jump event at the Rio Paralympics by registering the best mark of 1.89 meters.
