Srinagar: An Army man was killed and another went missing on Friday as an avalanche struck an army patrol party in Turtuk sector of Siachen glacier.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Friday morning at 8am when troops were on patrol in Turtuk region of Ladhak. An avalanche hit the patrolling party and buried two soliders under snow.
A massive search and rescue operation was launched immediately. While the army rescuers pulled one of the two soliders from under the snow, search operation to locate another solider is still going on.
The rescued solider Lance Havildar Bhawan Tamang, who is a resident of Lopshu village in Darjeeling tehsil of West Bengal, was immediately evacuated to a nearby medical facility where he succumbed to his injuries.
Earlier, ten army jawans, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed when an avalanche hit a high-altitude army post in Siachen Glacier on February 3.
