Snub for Pakistan: Germany supports surgical strikes

New Delhi: In a major diplomatic victory for India and snub for Pakistan, India has bagged the backing of both Germany and Sri Lanka for the surgical strikes conducted by Indian Army across LoC. Saying that every country has a right to defend its territory, German Ambassador to India, Martin Ney, has said that Germany stands with India in the fight against terrorism. “I was the adviser for international law. I am a trained international lawyer, and there are two clear norms in international law governing this issue. First, every state is has to ensure that from the territory it controls, there is no terrorism emanating. Secondly, any state has the right to defend its territory from international terrorism,” he said.

“When it comes to counter terrorism, Germany stands side by side with its strategic partner India. That is absolutely clear and these are not empty words in a political statement that was signed between PM Modi and German Chancellor Merkel, but we follow this up with concrete projects that I am sorry to say are confidential," he said. “But, I assure you that standing side by side with India against terrorism are not empty political words," he added.

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka PM Ranil Wickremasinghe said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a lot of steps to defuse tensions between India and Pakistan. “We are also a country affected by terrorism. We have discussed that how does SAARC evolve from here. Let us look at ensuring there is no cross-border terrorism in India or any other country in the region. SAARC nations must discuss cross border terror. There is no future of SAARC if there is no cooperation,” he said. The SAARC Summit being cancelled a few days ago is yet an another example of the growing anguish among regional allies and neighbours towards Pakistan and its lack of steps to counter terrorism.
