Technology plays a crucial role in shaping the lives of the young minds. However, it's good or bad, that is something we have to decide.
Technology offers some great revolutionary ideas, but it also undermines the growth of a child — restricting the mental growth to only the 4 x 4 screen in front of it.
The increased dependency of children on gadgets has highlighted some major detrimental issues that may hinder the evolution of the young mind.
Here are some of the positive as well as negative aspects of being dependent on modern technology -
A good samaritan- In today’s world, technology plays a very crucial role in educating students. It allows students to utilise apps, search engines, videos, portable technologies and interactive activities to help them gain information and resources. It is 24*7 available so there is no time boundation.
Keeping in touch- Once, there used to be a time when people use to wait for months to reach to someone, but now only by the use of technology one can easily reach out to many people.
Improves Language skills- As children love to spend time with modern technology, they can read eBooks, which in turn helps them learn new words and pronunciations. Parents can provide children with picture dictionary or flashcards for them to boost their vocabulary.
Better hand-eye coordination- While playing games on cell phones/tablets, children tend to speed up their fingers according to the game, which lead to better hand and eye coordination.
Widens their perspective- As all kids cannot go to parks and zoo and other exciting places due to one reason or the other, the technology offers them the needful: enriching their minds and broadening their perspective, in turn. It also help kids to be aware about the surroundings be it political, social, environmental or cultural.
Now that we have discussed some positive points let's have a look on negative aspects of technology-
Social skills- As kids do not communicate to outside world one on one, they really get confused when they have to face any such conversation. As, in technology they only have to type to communicate, hence they sometimes lack in expressing their thoughts while communicating personally.
Posture- Whether it is day or night, kids are always addicted to technology so much that they sometimes forget the right posture to sit, which leads to health issues. Given their over-indulgence in gadgets and lack of time for exercise, they also become highly prone to obesity.
Pollution- With the large infusion of new gadgets to the already staggering number, the level of toxic waste is threatening. The technological components (batteries, wires, etc) are not always disposed of properly, causing deadly chemicals to leach into the ground. Plants that manufacture the electronics are emitting toxic fumes into the air. Plus, there is little to no regulations on the disposal of personal E-waste.
Behaviour- The overuse of technology leads to violence. Some online sites show aggressive acts which results in bad and violent actions.
Eyesight loss- Watching something 24*7 surely affects the eyes and cell phones do it even worse. Since many kids use their mobile phones/laptops/tablets more often at night, their eyes are subjected to more stress, which causes eyesight problems. Clinging headphones to ears throughout the day also takes a toll on their ears.
So now that we have told you pros and cons about the technology, it’s up to you how you lead your kids to the horizon of technology.
