Have you ever coughed on for months together and none of the remedies you tried have worked? Coughing is one of the body’s most basic defence mechanisms, actually. We cough to expel foreign particles from our respiratory system, which can help to clear bacteria and viruses out of the system. Before you begin on remedies, its important to realize the origins or causes of your cough.
Here are three of them:
* Environmental Causes: Chemicals or irritants in the environment can also produce an ongoing cough, especially if you are allergic to that trigger. Cigarette smoking is an obvious offender, as are dust, mold and pollen. If your chronic cough is due to an allergy, medications to treat it may improve your symptoms.
* Digestive Causes: It happens when the acid from your stomach splashes up into your esophagus, irritating both your esophagus and the larynx, or voice box. That condition is called gastroesophageal reflux, or GERD. Oddly enough, you don't have to have a burning sensation or other signs of reflux for this to happen.
* Infections: In most cases, the infection is in the upper respiratory tract and affects the throat, this is known as a URTI or URI (upper respiratory infections) and its symptoms include flu, common cold and laryngitis.
