To get wife elected, mafia don Mukhtar Ansari forms `technical' alliance with Mulayam family

New Delhi: Mafia don of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Mukhtar Ansari is desperate to get his wife Afsan Ansari elected as MLA in the coming UP elections. Mukhtar's aide term Afsan as a politically sharp and friendly person, and the entire family respects her word.

People close to the Ansari family say that it was Afsan who had convinced Mukhtar and Afzaal Ansari to join BSP in 2009. Mukhtar then contested Lok Sabha elections against Murli Manohar Joshi from Varanasi, while brother Afzal contested from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh.

The reason for Mukhtar's desperation, according to sources, is his long stint in jail. The don is in jail for the last 11 years. He has won last two elections from Mau assembly seat while contesting from the jail. One of Mukhtar's brother, Sibgatullah is sitting MLA from Ghazipur's Mohammadabad assembly seat, while elder brother Afzal is a former MP.

Mukhtar has now told senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders that his family is willing to support SP in the coming UP elections without any formal alliance or merger.

Mukhtar has suggested a  'technical alliance', under which Ansari family will not put candidates against SP candidates in the region, and in return, SP should not put a candidate against Afsan and other Ansari family candidates.

Sources say that Mulayam Singh Yadav family has agreed to this technical alliance. However, SP has rejected Ansari family's demand for similar arrangement on two-three other seats that its supporters will contest.
