Afghanistan emerged champions of the inaugural Desert T20 tournament. The final of the Desert T20 2017 Challenge was played between Afghanistan and Ireland at Dubai. The Afghans, led by Mohammad Nabi, bowled out Ireland for a mere 71. Nabi claimed 4 for 10, while Amir Hamza, Fareed Ahmad and Karim Janat got 2 each. Afghanistan chased down the target easily with the help of Mohammad Shahzad’s blistering batting.
While it was a spectacular performance by Afghanistan, what went unnoticed was the fact that Shahzad became the first cricketer to score fifties in two separate international matches on the same day.
Also, during his course of 52-run knock, his tally of T20I runs reached to 1,656. He went past Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez and JP Duminy. He is behind only Brendon McCullum (2,140), Tillakaratne Dilshan (1,889), Martin Guptill (1,806), Umar Akmal (1,690), David Warner (1,686) and Virat Kohli (1,657). His strike-rate of 136.63 is the best among all batsmen with 1600 T20I runs.
Shahzad made these half centuries on semifinal and final respectively.
Batsmen have scored fifties in each innings of a Test (after following-on) on the same day, but Shahzad was the first to achieve this in separate international matches.
