Two Reasons for Social Media being so Addictive

We are social beings by nature. It’s because we respond to neurons that make us match each other’s emotions unconsciously and immediately. We leak emotions to each other. We anticipate and mirror each other’s movements when we’re in sympathy or agreement with one another – when we’re on the same side. Also, we can mirror each other’s brain activity when we’re into storytelling and listening – each side of the communication conundrum happens. Connected individuals build valuable relationships, our need to be connected and interact with others is universal and unavoidable, thus behind this social instinct there is the even more powerful necessity of giving and nurturing! Here are two reasons social media has fueled our addiction meters:

Firstly, social validation is important, thus facebook is like the ideal social platform for it. It absolutely affirms our existence the same way that a familiar face nodding at you on the sidewalk. Your need for affirmation can be for a deeper need for validation. Being validated is an essential part of being social. Because as human beings we are interdependent, it means our actions and thoughts need to be validated by others. Relationships are a two-way street. It isn’t that we can’t validate ourselves, it means that other people are just as important. Finally, being validated makes us happier, more emotionally stable, empathetic and competent as individuals.

Secondly, times have changed as the joint family system of the previous generation has taken shape in nucleur families. However what hasn’t changed is our need to have a strong support system to survive. Because of social media, 25 percent of us regularly make video calls to conduct more personal long distance chats with friends and family and 35 percent make video calling their children to be connected. The utmost reason why people interact on social media is because they cherish their family and friends. They want to nurture those relationships by encouraging them, congratulating them, praising them and just appreciating their presence in their lives. It’s just pure love. Giving importance to the You in the you and me bit of equation.

Thus, finally, language is the essence of expressing love, endearment and feeling towards each of our relationships. Language, gestures, emoticons have become essential social rules, which are shared and understood by everybody. In today’s date, information is power. Without a means of distributing information, people cannot harness the power. One positive impact of social media is in the distribution of information in today’s world. Platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and others have made it possible to access information at the tap of a button. Exchanging information and thoughts of concern and love makes us more socially and culturally aware of situations around the world, enhance our career opportunities and participate in cultural activities . Even the slob fests are necessary! It makes you feel so connected to that person, as if you are Siamese twins! Be logged in peeps, and remember to be fresh cuz social media is like the diner around the corner – you lose credibility, goodwill and followers by serving up stale and boring content!
