New Delhi: Controversial preacher Zakir Naik's Islamic Research Foundation reportedly confirmed that it had donated Rs 50 lakh to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) in 2011.
Officials claimed that four Ministry of Home Affairs authorities have been suspended for renewing the Salafist preacher Zakir Naik’s NGO licence and that it was one of the irregularities in its activities for which more suspensions are likely to follow.
A Times of India report cited the Congress admitting that it did receive Rs 50-lakh donation from the IRF for the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust, but claimed that the sum had been returned "some months ago".
Party spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi tried to emphasise that the donation was made at a time when neither Naik, nor his foundation was under scrutiny.
"Do you expect to know that Zakir Naik will be under scanner after years? One needs to be an astrologist for that. The moment investigation against Naik began, the donation was returned," IndiaToday quoted him saying.
